When Mote Marine was interested in building a new aquarium, we presented sketches of interactive displays and 3-D installations for the new facility.

Some of our fun and innovative ideas for the new aquarium included a touchscreen wall with a virtual aquarium for kids to create their own fish, name it, and take it with them via an app for tablet or smartphone. They could learn all about their fish through the app, care for it, and watch it grow. Then, when they are ready to release their fish, they can bring it back to the aquarium and download it into the "tank" where it will interact with other virtual fish and share the...

Khameleon Software has been a loyal client for over ten years. In that time we have designed and redesigned their website and now that the focus of their business has changed, they asked us to give them a more modern look with the flexibility of responsive design.

The old website featured Khameleon's three vertical markets: furniture business dealer systems, technology services, and service systems. The new focus is on furniture business dealers and client testimonials. So we began our redesign with the homepage and created a rotating slide show banner to showcase client success stories right upfront. These banner photos and quotes will change regularly to keep the site...

What is a responsive website?

As the name suggests, a responsive website is designed and coded to respond to the device it's displayed on. A responsive site not only automatically resizes a full-size website to fit your device, it reconfigures and simplifies the elements for optimal viewing and easier navigation, and speeds loading time to create an enjoyable online user experience.

I don't have a responsive website. Why do I need one?

It's a fact that more and more online visitors are coming to your website via mobile devices. If your website is not responsively designed, it may appear to the user as a tiny version of your full-size site. Users are then faced with having to painstakingly move around the page, enlarging sections as they go, or they get frustrated and bounce off in search of another site that is more viewer-friendly. A responsive site offers a positive user experience across all devices and screen sizes. This is important because it's impossible to...

Back to the beginning

In 2009, before Steve and I started our own studio, we stayed at the Carpe Diem Guesthouse in Provincetown, Ma. This was an extraordinary property with very ordinary marketing that did not reflect the world class level of the Inn. As a test to see if Steve and I could work together successfully as a team, we decided to redesign the Inn's marketing for free. We didn't let the owners know what we were up to, just in case we never produced anything worthwhile. We worked on Carpe in-between projects and in our spare time. Within six months we had created new branding for the inn and its sister-property Namaste Spa, along with a new website, brochures, advertising, signage, and merchandising. We sent the owners our presentation and they were thrilled with our new ideas. Not only did they say yes...

The Facelift

Updating your look to a more modern image is the most common reason companies give their brand a facelift. But refreshing a recognizable brand is more involved than one might think. Certainly, choosing the right designer to perform the nip and tuck is an important element for success. Here are a few other factors to consider:

Strategy

Companies have many reasons for updating their brand: revising the old look before it becomes outdated, increasing attention to generate sales, or even fixing a problem with the existing brand. Whatever the reason, the strategy should drive the design and not the other way around. A brand is more than just a pretty logo and needs to accurately represent the company's vision, values and mission to build strong brand equity with consumers.  A company must also consider its reputation and make certain it is sending the right message with design elements, images, and language.

Consumer Opinion

Consumer opinion determines the...

Although they are different from one another, microsites and landing pages can be used in conjunction with search engine optimization, search engine marketing and online advertising for more targeted content.

Landing Pages

Usually only one page, landing pages are important for lead-generation as they lead the visitor to take an action. Essential to the success of direct marketing campaigns such as pay per click search engine marketing, direct mail, print advertising, etc., we use and test many different landing pages through A-B testing or Multivariate testing in order to optimize conversion rates.

Microsites

A microsite also converts site visitors into leads, but a microsite does this through a more content-heavy approach, which offers enhanced search engine optimization opportunities over and above the landing page. The SEO advantage is in having a number of topic-specific pages with more original content, and the more content your site carries, the higher the...
